Ferrari Super Squalo

1955 Ferrari Super Squalo FL/9002

one-piece inline chassis for FC-130 (shortcan)

This is not the car that Cartrix have produced. Theirs was the 2.5 litre F1 version raced by the factory. Mine is the Formula Libre version factory-built for Reg Parnell and Peter Whitehead to race in NZ and Australia. After their Formula 1 lives came to an end, these were lengthened 75mm and fitted with 3.5 litre motors usually found in sports racing cars. Hence the higher bonnet line and much more muscular appearance.

There is a full history of the Whitehead car here http://www.barchetta.cc/.../for.../fl.9001.555.squalo.56.htm

I first saw these cars at the first international race I attended when I was six years old. The Whitehead car stayed in NZ, bought by Tom Clark. The Parnell car was sold to Arnold Glass and stayed in Sydney.

As an irrelevant aside, the Whitehead chassis eventually became the basis for a crazy All-comers saloon car when fitted with a Chev V8 and a lo-lite Morris Minor body.
